Dear Christian Blogger: Fornication Still Means Sex Outside of Marriage

So I was watching a popular blogger recently, and he made a bold claim: that fornication doesn’t mean sex outside of marriage. He argued that the Bible only condemns illicit sex—not consensual sex between unmarried people. And while I tried to follow his logic, I had to hit pause and say, “Sir… let’s open the Bible.”

Because here's the truth: fornication does mean sex outside of marriage, and yes—the Bible speaks clearly against it.

What the Bible Says About Fornication and Illicit Sex

Let’s clear it up right now. The word “fornication” in the Bible is often translated from the Greek word porneia, which includes:

Sexual immorality
Adultery
Prostitution
Sex outside of marriage

That means fornication isn’t just about who you're having sex with—it's also about the context and covenant you're not under. If you're engaging in sex without a marriage covenant, the Bible considers that fornication. And in biblical terms, fornication is illicit sex.

Let’s back it up with scripture:

“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.”
– 1 Corinthians 6:18 (KJV)

“But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints.”
– Ephesians 5:3

That’s not unclear. That’s not symbolic. That’s the Word.

This isn’t about condemnation or making anyone feel ashamed—it’s about honoring truth. When we speak on scripture, especially matters as serious as sexuality and sin, we have a responsibility to quote it accurately and in context.

Read the Bible for Yourself

This is why it is so important to read the Bible for yourself. We live in an age where social media influencers and bloggers preach convenience, not conviction. They redefine words to fit modern desires and call it freedom—but real freedom is rooted in truth, not feelings.

It’s easy to twist Scripture when you're looking for a loophole. But the Bible doesn’t shift with opinion polls. If it was wrong then, it’s still wrong now.

Final Thoughts

Let’s stop playing games with God’s Word. If we’re going to have real conversations about sex, purity, and relationships, let’s do it biblically. Fornication isn’t a “churchy” word—it’s a reality check. And if you're unsure what something means, dig into the Word. Don’t let someone with a platform mislead you with partial truths.

Because at the end of the day, God’s standard hasn’t changed.
